Garland is a suburb of Dallas, Texas, in Dallas County, Texas, USA. From the 2000 census, the city population was 215,768. Garland is somewhat famous for being one of the Inspiration for former Garland resident Mike Judge television show King of the Hill, which is presented in "Arlen, Texas."

Settlers began arriving in the Peters colony around 1850, but the community was not created until 1874. The two communities actually sprung to the field, "Embree," the name of the doctor KH Embree, and "Duck Creek," named for the local creek of the same name. A rivalry of two cities the scope, as the region began to grow around the Santa Fe Railroad depot. Finally, to resolve disputes over which city should be the local post office, Dallas County Judge Thomas A. Nash asked visiting Congress, Joe Abbott to go to the post office in cities and in 1887, this is exactly what happened. The new location was named "Garland" after the Prosecutor-General Augustus Hill Garland. Both Embree and Duck Creek were disbanded, and they combine to form a city Garland. In 1891, when the new city was incorporated. By 1904, the city had a population of 819 people.

1920, local businessmen with the money to fund a new generator for the city sold to Fair-Morse. Out of this was formed Garland Power & Light, the municipal electric provider more power in city today.

Companies began to move the area in the late 1930s. Craddock, and later the Byer-food Rolnick hat factory (now owned by Resistol) moved the territory. In 1937, KRLD, a local radio station, which is built on the radio tower in Garland. During the Second World War a number of plants have been operating in the area of the aircraft, and Kraft Foods purchased one after the war, the use of the manufacturing process itself. By 1950, the population was 10,571 people.

From 1950-1954, the area affected by severe drought. In order to meet the needs of water, from wells, the city began to use the waters in the vicinity of Lake Lavon, through which it is possible to improve the water supply.

After World War II, the suburban population growth, the nation experienced the Garland. Garland is home to 3D Realms, the video game company, which has been created and developed Duke Nukem 3D, developed Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne. They are currently working Duke Nukem Forever.

In addition to Mike Judge previously taking residence in Garland, singer LeAnn Rimes also grew up in Garland. Lonestar keyboard player Dean Sams was born in Garland. David Koresh attended Garland High prior to his involvement in the infamous Waco incident.

Was 73,241 households, of which 41.6% are under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% were married couples living together, 13.7% were female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 19.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.37.

In fact, the population of the city spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.6% 18-24, 33.0% 25-44, 20.5% in the 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, was 95.3 for men.

The average income for a household in the city was $ 49,156 and the median income for a family was $ 53,545. Males had an average income $ 35,859 versus $ 29,392 for females. Per capita income in the city was $ 20,000. About 6.8% of families and 8.9% of the population to the poverty line, including 11.3% 18 8.7% of the minors of the 65 or more.

Most of Garland is the Garland Independent School District. Garland reach parts of other regions, including the Dallas Independent School District, Mesquite Independent School District, and the Richardson Independent School District. GISD has not been to school zoning, so GISD residents may apply to any GISD school.

The GISD Garland served by more than one part of the high school, including the Garland High School, North Garland High School, South Garland High School, Naaman Forest High School, Rowlett and Sachse High School in high school. Lakeview Centennial High School is a magnet school located in GISD Garland. Garland High School International Baccalaureate program resides in the county. The North Garland High School is a math, science and technology magnet.

Garland served by part of the MISD Price Elementary School, Vanston Middle School and North Mesquite High School.
