Flower Mound is a town in Denton County, Texas (USA). From the 2000 census, the city population was 50,702, but recent studies show the numbers to be closer to the 70000th

The name comes from a high mountain located in the southern part of the city. While surrounded by commercial and residential development, Mound, believed to be a Native American burial ground is a privately owned, in order to be protected from further development.

Flower Mound is a small town vibe with easy access to Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas / Fort Worth Metroplex. (It refuses to be referred to as the "city", despite its recent growth, it bills itself as the "City of Flower Mound", a "Town Hall" and "City Council"). This is the home of two high schools, Edward S. Marcus High School and later the High School, Flower Mound, as the Lewisville Independent School District.

Native American habitation in the end of the Denton County goes back to at least 4000 BC, according to archeological surveys by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. European settlement in the area of Flower Mound has already been reported as the 1840s. Nineteenth-century settlers such as Andrew Morris, and David Kirkpatrick are still memorialized the names of city streets.

Urban area remained sparsely populated for many decades after this initial solution. Not until 1961, the town was incorporated, in order to avoid annexation by the City of Irving. William Wilkerson, who became the second city mayor, spearheaded the incorporation effort, and helped to improve the city's water supply and telephone service.

As late as 1970, but the city only numbered 1,685 inhabitants. It was the failure of the U.S. Army's "New Town" development plan. However, there is a huge expansion of Flower Mound as part of the growth began in the area north of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the city grew by 1,990 per year rate of 12.8%. This growth has led to efforts to restrict the further development of the city, but Flower Mound's population is steadily increasing.

The town is primarily served by Lewisville Independent School District. Other parts are served by Argyle Independent School District, Denton Independent School District, and Northwest Independent School District.
